Start with safety
A car that will not start can be frustrating, especially in bad weather or away from home. A flat battery is one possible cause, but not the only one. Before trying anything, make sure the car is in a safe place. Switch off unnecessary electrical accessories and use hazard lights when needed to warn other road users. If the vehicle is stopped in a dangerous location, get yourself to safety and call for assistance.
Do not touch a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, unusually hot or giving off a strong smell. Do not attempt a jump start if you see smoke, sparks, damaged wiring or collision damage. Avoid smoking nearby or allowing metal objects to bridge the terminals. Never attempt to jump-start a frozen battery. If there is an immediate fire or other serious hazard, move away and call 112.
Check what the car is telling you
A slow engine crank, dim dashboard lights or clicking when you turn the key can point to a low battery, but these signs do not confirm the cause. A silent car may also have an electrical or key-related problem. If the engine turns normally but does not start, the issue may be unrelated to the battery. Note what happens, then avoid repeated attempts that could drain the battery further.
Check simple, safe details according to the handbook: the transmission position, key and accessories left on. Do not dismantle electrical parts or disconnect terminals to experiment. Modern cars have sensitive electronics and different battery layouts, so instructions for another vehicle may not apply. If you do not know the cause, describe the symptoms to a professional rather than deciding that a jump start must be the answer.
When a jump start may help
A jump start can help when the battery is discharged and both the vehicle and battery are in suitable condition. However, connection points and procedures vary by make and model. Hybrid and electric vehicles can have separate requirements, and some cars provide designated jump terminals away from the battery. Follow the vehicle handbook and use suitable equipment; if you cannot identify the correct procedure, do not guess.
Incorrect polarity or unsuitable connections can cause injury or damage vehicle electronics. Keep people clear of moving belts and fans, which can start unexpectedly. If the car starts, that does not establish that the battery is healthy or the underlying problem is fixed. A battery test or charging-system inspection may be needed, especially if the problem returns or warning lights remain on. Avoid improvising with unfamiliar equipment.
When to call for assistance
Call for help if you are unsure how to start the vehicle safely, lack appropriate equipment or are in an unsafe place. Assistance is also sensible if the car will not start after a safe attempt, or electrical warnings suggest a wider fault. A technician can assess whether on-site help is suitable. A damaged battery or another suspected fault may mean that recovery to a workshop is the appropriate next step.

For transport farther across Latvia and abroad we quote a fixed price before departure.
After the engine starts
Do not assume a short drive will fully recharge a weak battery. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and arrange a battery and charging-system check if the battery is old, the fault repeats or the dashboard shows warnings. Avoid switching off in a place where another no-start would expose you to traffic. If the vehicle behaves abnormally, stop somewhere safe and seek advice instead of continuing a long journey.
When calling, explain whether the engine cranks, whether lights come on and what attempts have been made. Mention warning messages, unusual smells and visible damage, and tell us if the vehicle is hybrid or electric. Send your location via WhatsApp. Clear details help determine whether a jump start or towing is appropriate. Agree the next step and price before work, choosing professional help over trial and error.
